Regal Service
Eight regents rule the lands of this age and all will offer quests as a means of "service" or they will accept tribute in the form of your "pence."
We'll take on tribute first, for it is simpler to explain. The castle courts are open and all are free to come and go as they please in the presence of the lord of the keep. If, however, a traveler honors the lord with a gift of some pence, the gift is always repaid at hand in another form. For every pence of the offering, the king will endow half as much and again the value of hit points by way of his own magics or those of his court wizards, if so necessary.
Example: offered 100 pence ... the king grants 150 points to your hits.
Example: offered 51 pence ... the king gives 75 hits. (half hits cannot be tallied so they drop out)
Providing service to a lord is a more involved task. Each king grants quests to either find a Landmark or to slay a particular Dungeon Beast. Those regents that may set you to the Landmark quest reside in the castles of style one, located in the approximate center of the continent and has a satellite towne nearby. On requesting to serve such a lord, they speak thus:
Go forth and find LANDMARK Do not return until thy quest is done! |
... where LANDMARK is, of course, your destination. On finding the landmark and entering, besides receiving the endowment that this particular landmark grants if one is deserving, the message "A quest has been completed!" is displayed. This only seals half of the task, though. You then return to the king who granted the quest and as a reward for your service, your strength attribute is advanced a variable amount. The relationships are as follows:
Patron King | Landmark |
On completion ... |
Lord British | Ah, PLAYERNAME! Thou hast completed thy quest. For this I will give thee X point(s) of strength. |
|
The Lord of Barataria | ||
The Olympian Regent | ||
The White Dragon King |
... take note, you can only get a boon from a landmark after several moves, say 100. This is not a problem, just an inconvenience when trying to advance your attributes.
Those quests more integral to the course of action that completes the game are initiated by the lords in the castles of style two. These keeps straddle a mountain range and can be approached from both the land on one side and the sea on the other. The king's message is deceptively simple:
Go now and kill a DUNGEON BEAST Do not return until thy quest is done! |
... where DUNGEON BEAST is the intended victim of your quest. The missing key here is that Dungeon travel is required.
Patron King | Dungeon Beast |
Ah, PLAYERNAME! Thou hast completed thy quest. For this I shall tell thee ... |
