From the Top

The first menu after the game's splash screens allows selection between creation of new characters [a] or starting a game [b].

Upon choosing to set up a new player, if you have already four characters saved you must select one to remove to make room. Then a dialog starts with your characteristics selection. The six basic attributes start with ten points apiece: strength, agility, stamina, charisma, wisdom, intelligence. The first task is then to distribute thirty free points into the attributes as you wish. Maximum allotment to one attribute is twenty-five while minimum is ten. The effects of attributes are detailed in the Economics section. Once complete, three choices are to be made. First is your hero's race, followed by its gender and last, its class. Race and class both affect the attributes (gender does not, curious that), the modifiers are as follows.

Attribute Modifiers for Race and Class
Race Human: INT+5 Elf: AGI+5 Dwarf: STR+5 Bobbit: STR-5, WIS+10
Class Fighter: STR+10, AGI+10 Cleric: WIS+10 Wizard: INT+10 Thief: AGI+10

Once these choices are complete, one must type in a name that is a maximum of fourteen characters in length. You are finally asked if you wish to keep the created character. Yes saves the character you've just created and returns you to the main menu. No starts the dialog over, and at any time in this sequence the [ESC] key also breaks out to the main menu.

(Note: All my locations are based on the game's main map. The upper left corner of the map is in the middle of the sea northwest of the Lands of Lord British. The furthest unit is denoted as 000 'south' or 'lat' by 000 'east' or 'lon' and increases to the east and the south.)

When starting for the first time, you are placed at 040 by 049, its an easy walk to the castle of this land's primary lord, British, the only landmark visible from your starting point view. You have 150 hit points, 200 servings of food and 1 Gold Crown. (100 copper pence equivalent) You're clad in leather armour and armed with two daggers.

Now, on your way, lad or lassie, 'cause ye've a bit ofa journey ta be gettin' to!
